FAQs
Matting is a condition in a dog’s fur that is caused by dense tangles and knots. It is more prevalent in long-haired dogs, especially during shedding season. If a coat is not properly and frequently brushed, loose and live hair become embedded in large masses. In extreme cases, the dog’s coat will become what groomers call “pelted”. Matting is a painful condition that can lead to other health concerns such as skin infections and/or irritations, skin bruising, hematoma, loss of airflow to the skin, loss of blood flow to the skin, sores, hotspots, and several other issues.
Matting can be prevented by properly and frequently brushing your pet’s coat. Regular grooms (6-8 weeks) can prevent matting in addition to section/line brushing with a slicker brush and checking over your work with a greyhound comb while at home. Working in partnership with your groomer is key to maintaining your pet’s healthy skin and coat.
At Pampered Pets Grooming, we recommend brushing your pet(s) at least once every other day to discourage the coat from forming pin knots and later, matting.
Nails should be clipped every 3-4 weeks, depending on your pet’s activity level. Pet nails are made up of different components: the bone, quick, and the shell. The quick is a cuticle that is very soft. It is made up of blood vessels and nerves that encase the bone. The quick is covered by the shell, which is what we see when we look at our dogs nails. By maintaining consistency in regular nail trimming, the quick can recede, allowing the nails to be trimmed shorter over time. If your pet’s nails are left uncut for too long, the pressure of the overgrown nails pressing against the ground can bring pain to your pet. In very severe cases, the nail can curl into your pet’s paw pads, which will result in a vet visit.
A hematoma is a localized bleeding outside of blood vessels, similar to a bruise. It is most commonly due to trauma to the larger blood vessels. Hematomas most commonly occur around the more sensitive areas of your pet (i.e., ears and tail). However, hematomas can occur anywhere on the skin. Trauma (i.e., severe matting) can cause the blood vessel walls to break, allowing blood to make its way into the surrounding tissue and pool. If left untreated, hematomas can burst through the skin and will result in a vet visit. Regular, proper brushing and grooming sessions can help with the prevention of hematomas.
Pyotraumatic Dermatitis (also known as hot spots or moist dermatitis) is a bacterial skin condition caused by trauma to the skin, and is characterized by a localized, moist, erythematous (inflamed) area. Common causes of the itching/scratching cycle in dogs include: dog food allergies, atopic dermatitis, flea allergy dermatitis, ear or skin infections, contact irritants, stress or boredom resulting in excessive licking, coat that is dirty or matted, and moisture trapped in the coat from swimming or bathing. Hot spots are most common in dogs with long or thick coats. Veterinary care should be highly considered if your pet develops hot spots to prevent secondary infections. Regular grooming sessions to maintain your pet’s skin and coat can help with the prevention of hot spots.
